This Small Tortoiseshell butterfly can be seen between February and October throught the UK. This Small Tortoiseshell was seen on the top of Winter Hill.

Small Tortoiseshell butterflies hibernate through the Winter months in hollow trees and old buildings.

The caterpillar of the Small Tortoiseshell is 2 to 2.5 cm long and is often yellow in colour with many close black spots and black spines and can be found between May and August on stinging nettle plants.
