Horwich Parish Church

Horwich Parish Church is at least the third known church to be built at this location. The first chapel that we know about was infact built by a local tailor who worked for less than a penny per day for his labour. He was granted permission to sculpture a large pair of scissors into one of the key stones, an emblem of his trade as a tailor.

In 1565 the commissioners for removing superstitious ornaments removed several religious items from the chapel that were thought to be of a catholic nature. The chapel was replaced with a larger building in 1782 when the population of Horwich had grown with the arrival of Wallsuches bleach works and of course the Ridgway family during 1774.

The current Church was funded largely by the Ridgway family and it was Joseph Ridgway who laid the foundation stone on May 21st 1830. In recognition of their generosity the Ridgway family crest which features a camel was built into the tower under the clock face above the entrance to the church.

Joseph Ridgway died in 1842 and was buried at the Parish church in the Ridgway family vault. A lifelike Westmacott white marble sculpture of his wife kneeling in prayer at the Ridgway family pew was added to the church in condition with his will. Incidentally all the bequest in Joseph Ridgway's will regarding the Parish church were suspended until the Reverend Hewitt had left the Parish as the pair were often feuding with each other. The church was given a new chancel which was added in 1911 in memory of the Reverend Pigot who had succeeded Reverend Hewitt after his resignation in 1852.
