The Cottage Hospital was built in 1894, funding was provided by Henry Yates Thompson who had already given such gifts to the town as the recreation ground and bandstand. The Hospital would provide treatment for the people of the works and a number of other local firms. The hospital was used during the First World War by wounded servicemen to convalesce. The hospital was eventually phased out by the County Councils hospitals and was last used as a workshop.
